Ultrasound imaging (sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to view inside the body. The sound waves are directed at the internal body part from a small, vibrating crystal in a hand-held scanner called a Transducer. The scanner reflects sound or ‘echoes’ to create an image. Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can also show movement of the body’s internal organs as well as blood flowing through the blood vessels. Ultrasounds are a non-invasive imaging technique that does not involve radiation. It is commonly used to study the abdominal organs, pelvic organs and breast tissue and joint composition.
Related Information
What happens during the scan?
In the majority of cases, Ultrasound will be performed by a sonographer and in some instances a radiologist (doctor). If a procedure is being performed, you may be accompanied by a sonographer (providing the scanning) and a radiologist (doctor performing the procedure).
Patients’ are generally required to change into a gown and lie on the examination bed in the Ultrasound room. A gel is applied to the skin in the area of the body being studied. This enables the ultrasound probe to transmit and receive soundwaves effectively and provide clear pictures. Only the required amount of pressure to obtain clear pictures is used and generally ultrasound is completely painless.
The procedure
Ultrasound scans last for approximately 30 minutes in the Ultrasound room. Other more technical studies such as Doppler (that is often used to image arteries and blood flow) can take longer as more information is captured.
If a procedure is being performed, such as an injection, the radiologist will likely provide feedback and information to help you understand what to expect and do after you time with us.
